The Portugal ESC European Solidarity Corps volunteering project will take place in a Local Branch of the Portuguese Red Cross, based at the small rural village of Vila de Cucujães (in the North Region of Portugal). The humanitarian organisation develops various projects for different target groups in order to answer to vulnerable people’s basic needs and promote social inclusion. Volunteers will collaborate in: Food Bank (includes picking up and transporting food donations, storing, and organising food supplies, and then distributing them to families and individuals in need); Social Store (doing the triage, organising clothing, shoes, and toys donations to be distributed to people in need or to be sold at our Social Store); the Elderly Nursing Home; the Center for people recovering from addictions; the “Active Mix” (which is a group of people with disabilities that come together to dance, make arts and crafts, and other leisure time activities); a Youth Summercamp with children in Summer; among many others tasks.
ACCOMMODATION, FOOD AND TRANSPORT ARRANGEMENTS
The volunteers will live in a shared apartment located next to a pastry shop, an ATM machine, a supermarket, the post-office, and the village’s main Church. Each volunteer will share the bedroom with another volunteer of the same gender. Volunteers receive: food allowance in the amount of 150€/ month and pocket money in the amount of 5€/ day. This amount is paid in the beginning of each month, preferably, by bank transfer. The volunteers will be reimbursed the real value of their travels between their country of origin and Portugal (to start the project and at the end of the project).
TRAINING DURING THE ACTIVITY
Volunteers will have the chance to learn Portuguese language through OLS (Online Linguistic Support) which can be used either on the phone or computer; they will also take part in the On Arrival Training and Mid Term Trainings which are both offered by the Portuguese National Agency. In addition, they will be welcomed to take online trainings (e-learning mode) on the Red Cross/ Red Crescent e-learning platform.
