6 Tips for Online Job Interviews

Job interviews can be daunting. Especially if the employer wants to meet you online face to face. In recent years, online calls have become popular in many companies such as Hilton, and they use this technology for pre-interview.

Although these interviews seem to be similar to the interviews we know, they actually have more than one difference and candidates should be prepared for these interviews. For example, in an interview – there are times when you record answers only to questions, rather than chatting with someone depending on the type. This can sometimes cause stress for candidates.

Attending an online job interview may scare you, but don’t worry! Here are 6 tips that will help you succeed in the talks.

Check if your computer is working.

These days, especially in interviews, the computer is very important and you should be able to use whatever you want (Zoom, Skype, FaceTime) when you are talking. After making sure that you do not have any problems with the program you will use, make sure that the sound system of your computer is working.

Tip: Before starting the interview, ask the other person in what format the interview will be. A few questions to make sure you’re ready;

Will the interview be aloud or in both audio and video formats?

Is there someone at the other end of the interview and questions have been recorded beforehand?

How many times do I have the chance to answer the questions

If I have a problem, who should I contact and what should I do?

Choose the best place.

Make sure your location is not dark, but make sure there is not too much light during the call. Try to be on the windowsill as much as possible, because natural light is the best. Other lighting can be uncomfortable. Glows can disturb the person in front of you.

Tip: In order not to panic when there will be a meeting, set a place for yourself 1 day before the meeting.

Remove distractions.

Mute your phone and email notifications. Because these can prevent you from speaking.

Tip: Make sure that there is no one else but you, including pets, at the meeting location. Some people who had previously interviewed mentioned that they saw cats passing by, a semi-clothed man and a pile of laundry during the interview. Do not risk your career by not getting prepared before !!!

Sit upright and dress like a pro.

You may not know the person you will be interviewing, but try to dress well to increase your chances. First impressions are an important factor especially in today’s world.

Tip: Don’t forget to smile! Whether you’re talking to someone or recording, it’s important to smile.

Calm down.

If you are nervous or have trouble remembering what you have to say, practice about the main topics you will use in your speech. In this way, the interview can be easier.

Tip: Although we are talking about online conversations, also review old or familiar interview skills. For frequently asked questions, you will want to create answers in your mind or set some examples.

Look into the eye of the person you are interviewing.

Eye contact is also very important for online calls. Instead of looking at the person on the screen, make eye contact with the person.

Tip: If you don’t feel comfortable this way, put a photo of someone you know on the camera. This way you can feel as if you are talking to a friend and be more comfortable.

Most importantly, don’t stress too much. Online interviews are something that many companies use in preliminary interviews. Because online conversation saves time and money. In the next step, you will have the opportunity to meet your employer mutually in mutual interviews.

What is the best part of an online interview? No need to worry about shaking hands with a company!
